Sustainability

Sustainability at Woodside

At Woodside, we believe that caring for God’s world is not only a responsibility but a joy. As a Church of England school, our Christian vision —
“Together in God’s love we inspire and grow through living life in all its fullness” (John 10:10) —
calls us to be stewards of creation, protectors of the Earth, and advocates for a fairer, greener future.

Sustainability is not a standalone project at Woodside. It is a mindset, a value and a commitment woven throughout our curriculum, our environment and our daily life together.

Our Commitment to God’s Creation

We teach children that the world is a precious gift from God, entrusted to us to cherish, protect and restore. Through worship, RE, science, geography, and enrichment opportunities, pupils learn:

  • That caring for creation is part of Christian responsibility
  • That our actions affect people, creatures and ecosystems around the world
  • That small changes made together can have a big impact
  • To appreciate the beauty and wonder of nature
  • To act with compassion, respect and stewardship

This reflects our vision of enabling children to flourish spiritually, morally and socially while becoming responsible citizens of the world.

Education for Climate Action

Education is a powerful tool in tackling climate change. The Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy (DfE, 2022) aims for the UK to become a world leader in sustainability education by 2030, and we are proud to play our part.

At Woodside:

  • Children learn about climate change, pollution, biodiversity and environmental responsibility
  • We empower pupils to make informed, thoughtful choices
  • We encourage children to question, explore and take action
  • We model sustainable behaviours through our site, systems and routines
  • We help pupils understand how global issues affect local communities — and vice versa

We want every child to leave Woodside with the knowledge, confidence and motivation to protect the world they inherit.

Our Sustainability Action Plan

Our Sustainability Action Plan outlines our long‑term commitment to caring for the environment and educating children for a sustainable future. It includes work across:

  • Energy efficiency and carbon reduction
  • Waste reduction and recycling
  • Biodiversity, planting and outdoor learning
  • Sustainable travel and safe routes to school
  • Curriculum and enrichment opportunities
  • Community engagement and awareness

This plan is reviewed regularly as part of our ongoing transformation of our school environment, culture and curriculum.

Sustainability in Our Curriculum

Sustainability is woven through every part of our curriculum so children understand the world, care for it deeply, and feel empowered to make a difference.

Science

Children learn about ecosystems, the water cycle, habitats, renewable energy and environmental change.

Geography

Pupils explore climate zones, weather patterns, deforestation, the Amazon rainforest, and the impact of human activity on the planet.

RE & Collective Worship

Themes of stewardship, justice, compassion and responsibility for creation are central.

DT & Art

Children use recycled materials, learn about sustainable design and explore global issues through creative expression.

Outdoor Learning

Forest school, gardening projects, pond environments and nature exploration allow children to connect with creation first‑hand.

School Council & Eco Initiatives

Children play an active role in shaping sustainable choices and championing change.

Living Life in All Its Fullness — Sustainably

Sustainability sits at the heart of our mission to help every child live life in all its fullness.
By learning how to care for themselves, their community and the world around them, pupils gain:

  • Purpose
  • Hope
  • Agency
  • Empathy
  • Responsibility
  • Spiritual growth

We want Woodside pupils to grow into courageous advocates for the environment — children who understand that protecting God’s world is part of living well, loving generously and leaving a legacy of hope.

Together, we care for God’s creation.

Together, we grow a greener future.
Together, we live life in all its fullness.
